AI and the African Penguin
Colony at De Hoop

Security technology is usually applied to protecting people and property. At De Hoop Nature Reserve, DeepAlert has been part of something a little different: helping protect one of South Africa’s most endangered species.

DeepAlert sponsored the software used on cameras monitoring the African Penguin colony at De Hoop.

The system was configured to send real-time alerts when people or wild animals entered or approached the penguins’ protected area — helping conservation teams respond quickly to disturbances that could disrupt nesting or endanger the colony.

The same core capability that identifies intruders on a commercial property — accurate detection, low false-alarm rates, instant alerting — translates directly to conservation monitoring. It is a reminder that AI video analytics is ultimately a tool for protecting things that matter. In this case, what matters is an irreplaceable population of African Penguins.

DeepAlert is proud to have contributed to this effort.
